Air bags reduce the chance of injury during a car accident

There is of course the risk of being involved in a car accident each time you climb behind the wheel but there are certain safety measures that you can take to make sure you and your passengers are at less risk of sustaining serious personal injuries.

Safety features, such as air bags, are designed to improve the protection offered by seatbelts during car accidents. They come as standard in most new models but you can also arrange to have them fitted in many older cars.

Drivers’ airbags
During a serious frontal car crash, the air bag’s crash sensors detect the sudden decrease in speed and send a signal to the air bag inflator which fills with gas. This cushions the blow and prevents the driver from hitting the steering wheel with impact. Studies show that following car accidents, there are fewer reports of severe head injuries from drivers that have air bags installed in their cars.

Seating position
When driving a car fitted with airbags it is essential that you attain a good seating position. This is important so that the airbag can work to its full potential and you will be at less risk from sustaining the minor personal injuries such as friction burns to the face. These are of course a very small price to pay for a safety feature that could save your life during a car accident.

Here are some guidelines for making sure you are sitting safely and correctly while driving:

  • Always wear your seatbelt, even when driving just a short distance
  • Position yourself as far away from the steering wheel as possible, while still maintaining safe control of the car
  • If you need to push your seat forward to reach the peddles, try reclining your seat back slightly to move you further from the steering wheel
  • If you have an adjustable steering wheel, try tilting it downwards so that the air bag points more towards your chest than your face
