Who is accountable for the increase in car accidents
and should we make a claim?

With an estimated 1.2 million people worldwide being killed as a result of car accidents and almost 40 times this amount suffering personal injuries it is of no surprise why we are receiving more and more car accident claims. But, who is responsible for the increase in car accidents?

Blame the driver?
'Car accident' is a rather loose term seeing as research shows that more than 90% of road accidents are the result of driver negligence. Consequently, terms such as car crash and traffic collision are more regularly used to describe such events.

Driver negligence could include driving carelessly or dangerously while fatigued or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drivers that are less aware and less alert are much more likely to cause a car crash.

Blame the car manufacturer?
Car manufacturers may also share some responsibility in the rising number of car accidents. It seems that many modern cars are designed with bigger, faster engines that satisfy an ever-growing need for speed which appears to be fuelled by programmes such as Top Gear.

In-car toys such as mobile phones, CD and DVD players, laptop computers and GPS navigation are also seen as a major distraction to drivers and could be one explanation for an increase in car accidents over the last 10-20 years.

Certain car makes and models are also much more likely to cause personal injury or death to their occupants if involved in a car crash. There is a 6% chance of death by car accident in a lightly built car such as the BMW 3 Series compared to only 1% chance in the sturdier Land Rover Discovery.

It is fair to say that the manufacturers of cars should be more mindful when designing safe cars just as motorists should adopt a cautious driving practice in order to minimise the number of car accidents in the future.
