Claiming free compensation after a car accident
The most frequent cause of death among today’s children in Britain is the car accident. In fact, 166 under 16’s were killed in 2004 due to car crashes and other road traffic incidents.
That’s one child killed every 55 hours.
In addition, over three thousand children were seriously injured on our roads in the same year, many so badly so that they would be scarred for life and never again be able to lead a normal existence.
Tens of thousands more children who were involved in less serious car accidents were not so unlucky, and were able to walk away relatively unscathed, probably feeling slightly shaken up but nursing nothing more long-term than cuts, bruises and possibly a whiplash injury.
Reduce the risk of injury in a car accident
But there is something you can do to protect your child. The lives of many of these children were probably saved by a seatbelt or child seat, both of which have proved time and time again to be vital in preventing death and serious injury among youngsters. The law is very specific about seat belt use as the following shows:
- You must wear a seatbelt if one is fitted and the driver is liable to prosecution if a child under 14 does not do so.
- You must not carry an unrestrained child in the front seat, and children under the age of three who are travelling in the front of a vehicle must be carried in an appropriate child restraint (the adult belt must not be used).
- If an appropriate child restraint or seatbelt is available in the front, but not in the rear, children under 1.5m in height and aged between 3 and 11 must use the front seatbelt or seat restraint.
Child seats and restraints are highly recommended for children too small to use the standard fitted seatbelt, and are regularly responsible for saving lives and preventing personal injury in the event of a car crash. Important advice on buying and fitting the correct type of seat for your particular vehicle and child can be found at www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk.
