9,000 pedestrians and cyclists die every year in road accidents
Thousands of road accidents in the EU every year
leave around 9,000 pedestrians and cyclists dead and a further 200,000 with serious personal injuries. There have been numerous calls for road safety campaigns in the UK although
the EU has concentrated on these horrific figures and introduced a legislation for pedestrian safety.
Experts have identified that in order to reduce the amount of casualties as a result of car accidents fundamental changes to car design are a must. William
Tiu from Hertfordshire University ’s School of Aerospace, Automotive & Design Engineering has designed software
named PEDMARKER to help with this.
PEDMARKER speeds up the process needed for car manufacturers to integrate ultimate safety features
into their design, cutting the time taken for such a process from three hours to just 20 minutes. The software helps to
mark out a grid at the front of the car so that parts of the car body that are more likely to cause personal injuries on impact such as the bumpers and the bonnet can be
identified and modified.
PEDMARKER has already been sold to Nissan in both the UK and Japan in 2005 and there are hopes that
this revolutionary technology will become more widespread. It is necessary to make cars pedestrian friendly in case of a
car accident to decrease these terrible
personal injury and fatality
statistics. Expectantly, the quicker and easier that more car models are designed to incorporate these safety features
the less personal injuries will be suffered by pedestrians and cyclists as
a result of road accidents.
