Car crash accident and motorcycle accident compensation claim- what your insurance covers
Car crash accident and motorcycle accident claims are one of the most common types of
compensation claim in the UK and often involve some serious
injuries. If you have been involved in a car crash accident
that wasn’t your fault, you may automatically think your car insurance company will take care of everything for you. For many people it’s not until they
have been involved in a car crash accident that they discover exactly what
their car insurance does and doesn’t cover them for.
The Car Accident Advice Line has been set up to help people who have had a car crash accident or motorcycle accident make an insurance compensation claim. The
service we can provide is based on the circumstances of the accident and the type of car insurance cover you have.
Our service can include all or some of the following:
Our service is available to everyone who has had a non-fault car crash accident, or motorcycle accident and is totally free to you. We will liaise
with the car insurance companies of all the people involved in the accident, and all vehicle hire and repair costs will
be recovered from the car insurance company of the person who was at fault for the car crash accident, or motorcycle accident.
Even if you have fully comprehensive car insurance, we can still help you as you are not making a
car accident insurance claim against your own car insurance
policy, but the insurance company of the person responsible for causing the car crash accident or motorcycle accident.
What your car insurance covers following a car crash accident
There is a general misconception of exactly what level of cover car insurance policies actually provide, so
every policy should be read to be certain of the protection it offers. However, generally there are three forms of cover:
- Comprehensive
- Third party fire and theft
- Third party only
Comprehensive car insurance policies
Most comprehensive car insurance policies offer the policyholder protection in the event of a
car crash accident or
motorcycle accident
, but this is usually limited just to the vehicle itself.
In the event of a non-fault car crash accident
or motorcycle accident the policy will normally cover the costs of
recovering and storing the vehicle, its inspection and the repairs. If the vehicle is a write-off the policy will cover
the pre-accident value of the vehicle.
The policy excess
If you make a car crash accident or motorcycle accident claim on your comprehensive car insurance policy (even if
the accident was not your fault) you will have to pay your policy excess. The excess payment is an ‘uninsured
loss’ i.e. not recoverable through your comprehensive car insurance policy. Other uninsured losses may include:
- Loss of earnings
- Hire vehicle costs
- Taxi fares
- Prescription charges
As part of our service we can help you recover all your uninsured losses from the car insurance
company of the person responsible for causing the car crash accident
or motorcycle accident.
Replacement vehicle following a car crash accident
Comprehensive car insurance policies rarely cover the cost of hiring of vehicles, although they may arrange for
you to have a small car (e.g. a Vauxhall Corsa or Ford Fiesta) for a few days.
We can supply a vehicle of equivalent model to the one you were driving, usually within the same day.
So if you need a six seater car for a large family or a van for work, that’s what you’ll get. And you will
usually be able to keep it until your damaged car is repaired. More information about getting a replacement vehicle

No claims discount
If you make a car crash accident claim on your own car insurance
policy, this will usually affect your premium and any ‘no claims’ discount you may have. Please call us for
advice on how we can help you protect your ‘no claims’ history.
Getting your vehicle repaired
If you are comprehensively insured your car insurance company will take care of the damage to your vehicle following a
car crash accident or motorcycle accident. They will arrange for your vehicle to be inspected and repaired, or if
it is a write-off, send you a cheque for the value of your vehicle before the car crash. You will have to pay a policy
excess for claiming on your policy, but we can help you recover this from the insurance company of the person responsible
for the accident.
If you do not wish to make a car crash accident
insurance claim on your own policy, we can arrange for your vehicle to be repaired or recover the value of your
vehicle from the person at fault's insurance company.
By choosing to use our service to arrange your repairs and send the bill directly to the person at
fault’s car insurance company, you won’t have to pay your insurance excess.

Third party / third party fire and theft
Third party car insurance policies only cover damage caused by a policyholder to another person, vehicle or property, not
their own.
Even in a non-fault car crash accident or
motorcycle accident the policyholder will be responsible for
all the damage caused to themselves, their vehicle and their property by another person. The policyholder may themselves
be able to recover these costs from the person responsible for causing the car crash accident (assuming the person was
insured). In the event of a dispute over who was responsible for the accident, losses may take many months to recover, if
at all.
Replacement vehicle
We can supply a vehicle of equivalent model to the one you were driving, so if you need a six seater car for a large

Getting your vehicle repaired
We will arrange for an engineer to inspect your vehicle and get the repairs authorised by the car insurance company of
the person responsible for the accident. If your vehicle is a write-off we will request a cheque for the value of your
vehicle in its condition, prior to the car
crash accident or motorcycle accident. See
