New EU car crash tests are the toughest yet!The toughest car accident tests in the world yet are now in force across the EU. The new implemented standards reflect ongoing concerns in the EU community about road traffic accidents and the fact that about 250 people die every day on European roads.
The new EU car accident tests are more demanding than even American tests, which have a reputation for being particularly thorough. The new laws were revealed at the 2006 Labour Party Conference by John Prescott, Deputy Prime Minister with responsibility for UK transport, after negotiations between motoring organisations, Euro-MPs and national governments. New side-impact tests
Crash test dummies have been around for some time and since 1974, a front-end car accident collision test has been mandatory for all models of vehicles. Side-impact tests have not, however, despite the fact that these types of car accidents cause more than 9,000 deaths and serious injuries every year in the UK.
From October 2006, any new car must be tested for a front-end collision (at 35 mph) and a side-impact collision (at 30mph). The EU has been trying to push these car accident tests through for over ten years. Motoring groups like the AA and RAC welcomed the move and RAC Head of campaigns Paul King said: "After two decades these new crash test laws will reduce the toll of deaths and injuries on our roads." Recall of dangerous cars
Although the UK has a comparatively good car accident record compared to other EU countries - with 1.4 deaths in 1996 for every 10,000 licensed vehicles - thousands of cars were recalled for safety checks between 1997 and 1998 because they could have been dangerous to drivers and passengers on the road.
