18 months for speeding motor accident man

A court has heard evidence this week regarding a motor accident that occurred when a young man who had only been out of prison for twenty days attempted to escape police in a stolen car at 120 miles per hour.

His attempts to evade police led to his weaving from lane to lane on a Leicestershire motorway, and even on to the hard shoulder, at very high speeds but pursuing marked cars kept pace with the man.

Aside from the dangerous driving that forced many other vehicles to brake and swerve, the driver of the stolen car collided with the rear of a Transit van, causing it to roll on to its side and slide into the motorway verge. The police, who stopped to deal with the car accident, were amazed to see the van driver climb out of the vehicle relatively unhurt, suffering from shock, whiplash and a further back injury.

The stolen car was later found abandoned in a field, and the driver picked up by police in a shop. He admitted dangerous driving, handling stolen goods, failing to stop and having neither licence nor insurance.

In court, the defendant was told, "It was mad, manic and very dangerous indeed driving in that manner.

"The worst of it was you collided, as was inevitable, into the rear of a van.

"Fortunately the driver sustained only minor injuries. That's a miracle.

"Can you imagine the fear the people on that motorway would have had at seeing you driving in that manner?"

The driver was sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders' institute for these offences. No comment has yet been made regarding the van driver's eligibility to make a motor accident compensation claim.
