New Euro NCAP car accident results show that small cars are becoming safer
The latest results from the new Euro NCAP car accident test system, announced in Madrid, show that small cars are gradually becoming safer.
The latest small cars being rated included The Citroen C4, the Seat Altea, the Citroen C5 and the Renault Modus.
The Citroen C4 got the highest possible score for occupant protection (five stars), four stars for child protection and three stars for pedestrian protection.
The child protection star rating system was introduced in November 2003, for cars with specific child seats to protect children in the event of a car accident that have been recommended by the car manufacturer.
The Seat Altea also scored five stars for occupant protection, four stars for child protection and three stars for pedestrian protection.
The seat belt reminder of the Citroen C5 stating that you need to fasten your seatbelt was thought to be particularly useful.
Euro NCAP Chairman Claes Tingvall said: "Manufacturers have realised that the occupants of smaller vehicles demand optimum safety standards. It is not merely a right reserved for those that can afford executive vehicles.
"The Ford Focus, Renault Modus, Citroen C4 and Seat Altea have all performed particularly well in terms of occupant and child protection. I am particularly delighted that the Citroen C4 and the Seat Altea also offer an enhanced level of protection for vulnerable road users.
"It is a major disappointment that nine of the fourteen models tested were worthy of just one star (out of four) for pedestrian safety. We believe that the public will be demanding more when they make their choice of new vehicle."
