Car manufacturers use Euro NCAP crash tests in adverts to prove their cars are safestDespite more rigorous crash tests, cars are still failing on safety features. New EU legislation designed to clamp down on unsafe cars that cause car accidents is failing to protect drivers adequately. Over 170,000 Europeans die in serious road traffic accidents every year.
Car manufacturers are madly trying to prove in the face of this information that their cars are the safest, through advertising campaigns, in an attempt to boost sales. The European New Car Assessment Program (Euro-NCAP) publishes car accident tests that provide consumers with accurate information based on in-depth research about the safety performance of particular models of cars in front and side collisions. From 1998, all new cars have been subjected to the rigorous tests. Broadcasting advertisers use the EURO NCAP tests for publicity
A whole host of media has picked up on the tests and advertisers are now incorporating imitations of the road traffic accident tests into TV adverts.
A television advert celebrating the French car Renault, originally made for German TV, shows a series of car accident tests with national symbols like a giant German sausage strapped into a carriage, which is slammed against a barrier into smithereens.
A roll of sushi is then hurled towards a barrier and disintegrates. When a French baguette is thrust into a barrier it absorbs the force of the impact, crumpling and then uncrumpling again. The advert aims to claim that French cars are safer, despite the fact that some motorists feel French cars have a reputation for breaking down.
