Government road safety statistics 2006

Road safety Government statistics for 2006 show that the number of fatalities has decreased and that road safety campaigns have had a considerable effect on improving driver behaviour and reducing the number of car accidents.

A new collections system was introduced in 1999 to recover hospital treatment costs for people who had experienced a car accident. Hospitals can recover the cost of treating people injured in car accidents who have made personal injury compensation claims.

A revised system of collection was introduced in April 1999 under the Road Traffic Act 1999 making it more straightforward and efficient to administer recovery of hospital costs after car accidents by centralising the system. The amount recovered and paid to NHS hospitals providing treatment increased from £20 to £120 million.

3,201 people were involved in fatalities on UK roads in 2005, one % less than the previous year

The number of people who were seriously injured in road traffic accidents overall fell to 28,954, seven % lower than 2004

The number of child deaths decreased by 15 %

The total of pedestrian road traffic accident casualties and seriously injured pedestrians both fell by 5 %

The total of motorcycle user fatalities fell by 3 %

Cyclist casualties fell by 1 %, although the overall number of fatalities increased.

Despite the fact that road traffic accident figures are falling, vehicle accidents continue to happen. Every two minutes in the UK, somebody experiences a car accident.

Although campaigns to improve driver behaviour have had some effect, UK statistics show that people are still careless on the road and personal injuries can be extremely serious, often resulting in fatalities.
